DotPNG | Studio An-Ra

DotPNG is a collection of icons that embodies and reflects the characteristics of the Indian Subcontinent. By working with illustrators from across the country, the project aims to develop a library of icons that are inclusive of gender, race, caste, class, age and geography.  Currently, if one is to do a quick google search or browse the stock libraries, the top results almost always display a higher percentage of white bodies engaged in activities that are representative of a western viewpoint.  DotPNG in response to this is about adding depth and context, bringing into focus nuance in localised representation.

I worked with Studio An-ra to develop two sets of icons: a collection of citizens and a collection of essential workers during the COVID pandemic. The studio provided the list of icons to be illustrated as well as the colour scheme.

A base body structure was created for each icon, which was then used as a working point to develop the specifics of the icon in both the collections.

Each icon is also a subset i.e each icon is available for usage in the six variant skin tone swatches.

The icons were used in designing social media promotion and awareness material for NGOs during the COVID pandemic.
